Value of Role Models

Several years ago, park rangers noticed an alarming decrease in rhinos in their habitat.

Investigations revealed a gang of aggressive young elephants was responsible.

This unnatural elephant behavior of ganging up on another animal and killing it for sport was discovered to be rooted in the fact that these particular herds had no adult male role models.

Once adult males were moved into the park, the killing stopped. 

“I think everyone needs a role model, and these elephants…had no role model and no idea of what appropriate elephant behavior was,” said Gus van Dyk, Pilanesberg Park’s field ecologist.
